Because, we are all in it together. Remember, one of my earlier blogs-\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/2023\/09\/21\/creativity-individual-success-or-collective-flourishing\/\"><i>collective flourishing<\/i>?\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">It will not be far fetched to say that\u00a0<i>monopoly\u00a0<\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">is a metaphor for\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">inequality<\/span><\/i>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\"><i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Marx<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0predicted that\u00a0competition among capitalists would grow so fierce that, eventually, most capitalists would go bankrupt, leaving only a handful of monopolists controlling nearly all production,\u00a0business and markets.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our <\/span>utility<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0company, especially if it&#8217;s\u00a0a <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">monopoly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, locks in an inherent, unfair and perennial advantage, giving it ample power to ignore customers and all of us suffer because of that. They actually send you emails with subject line screaming THIRD REMINDER, ten days before the due date and makes you feel that you have defaulted on their payment by months. So, what if you are a customer with them for 15 years plus? You can moan till the cows come home.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>If all of the housing real estate in a locality is owned by one landlord, little surprise that rents go only one way &#8211; north. The less said about the service, security and the facilities, the better.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>When the state or federal government <span style=\"color: #000000;\">controls the education of all of our children, they have the dangerous and illegitimate\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">monopoly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0to control and influence the thought process of our future citizens.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><b>Google<\/b><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0illegally maintained a\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">monopoly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0for far more than a decade,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><b>Kenneth Dintzer<\/b><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, a lawyer for the US Justice Department, argued in opening statements in the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>State VS Google antitrust<\/em><\/span> case. He added that Google&#8217;s dominance has allowed it to ignore privacy criticism and become sluggish when it comes to innovation, including in the development of AI products. That&#8217;s the other fallout of being a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>monopoly<\/em><\/span>&#8211; complacency and taking customers for granted. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Own it all<\/em><\/span>&#8220;. The official\u00a0<i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">monopoly<\/span><\/i>\u00a0slogan- So, yes,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Adam Smith<\/span>\u00a0(often identified as the father of modern capitalism), nailed it. He added &#8221; The essential feature of <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">capitalism<\/span><\/em> is the motive to make a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>profit<\/em><\/span>. It is <strong>not<\/strong> from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A bit of a backstory if you permit me. Don&#8217;t miss out on the irony of it all. In 1903,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lizzie Magie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, an American board game designer( and part time political activist)filed for a patent for her latest creation,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The Landlord&#8217;s Game<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><i>Magie<\/i><\/span>\u00a0also taught political economy and held the belief that a single tax system should prevail for all owners of property. She believed that the world around her at the turn of the twentieth century had become more unequal because of <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">rapacious mercantilism<\/span><\/em>, and wanted to spread the message that a more equitable form of taxation would be a remedy to societal ills.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Magie&#8217;s The Landlord&#8217;s Game<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0picked up some steam amongst the politically progressive demographic but never got into the mainstream. Until such time in 1932 when\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Charles Darrow<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0who was playing it one night(and desperately needed money) decided to tweak the game and decided to sell it.\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Parker Brothers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0bought the rights to the game, under a new brand name\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Monopoly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Magie<\/em><\/span>\u00a0was initially thrilled to see her version of the game in production but having been paid just\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>US$ 500<\/em><\/span>\u00a0and no royalties, she became increasingly disappointed. She spent the rest of her life as a receptionist, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>earning barely above minimum living wage.<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Monopoly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0remains one the most popular and profitable board games there is today and\u00a0<b>Darrow<\/b>\u00a0died a <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">multimillionaire<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>ENDS<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; A drag called Moan&#8211;opoly ! &nbsp; The idea here is not to\u00a0bemoan, but a nudge to make things better.
