{"id":933,"date":"2023-08-27T11:05:57","date_gmt":"2023-08-27T07:05:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/?p=933"},"modified":"2023-08-27T11:05:57","modified_gmt":"2023-08-27T07:05:57","slug":"getting-labellious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/2023\/08\/27\/getting-labellious\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting labellious!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Caveat<\/b>: No, I don&#8217;t think there is a word called\u00a0<i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">labellious<\/span><\/i>, but I took the liberty of being rebellious.Yes, since there is a word called rebellious.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since\u00a0<i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">judging\u00a0<\/span><\/i>others is a full time profession for many, most of the world is a well employed place. Unemployment is only a myth. Though, the jury might be out on that one!!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; I am not an optimist. I am a realist. And my reality is that we live in a multi faceted, multicultural\u00a0world. And maybe once we stop labeling ourselves, then maybe everyone else will &#8220;-\u00a0<b>Octavia Spencer<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To me,<i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0labels<\/span><\/i> were all about what we stuck on our notebooks and textbooks in school to establish &#8216; <i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">ownership<\/span><\/i>\u00a0&#8216; in the otherwise\u00a0<i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">sea of sameness<\/span><\/i>. When we grew up we were either at the giving or receiving end of labels like &#8216; She is a prude &#8216;, &#8216; He is an introvert &#8216;.&#8217; Oh no, he is a stick in the mud &#8216;. &#8216; She is a go-getter &#8216;. &#8216; He is a rare talent &#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then\u00a0<i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">marketers<\/span><\/i>\u00a0entered the zeitgeist gleefully labelling people\u00a0as &#8216; Millennials &#8216;, &#8216; Digital Natives &#8216;, &#8216; Baby Boomers &#8216; and what have you. Labelling makes &#8216;\u00a0<i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">targeting<\/span><\/i>\u00a0&#8216; easier.\u00a0<b>Apparently<\/b>!! That said, to me <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Demographics is Dead. RIP Demographics<\/em><\/span> !<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The thing with labels is that\u00a0it can be both empowering\u00a0and self-defeating. &#8216;I have tech phobia &#8216;. &#8216; I am a misfit in social circles &#8216;. We are all multi-faceted at most times\u00a0but the weight of a\u00a0<i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">label<\/span><\/i>\u00a0buttonholes us into a default mode of the &#8216;\u00a0<i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">prescribed mode of conduct<\/span><\/i>\u00a0&#8216;.\u00a0<i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">When the label description becomes the dictating narrative of our lives. The hunter becomes the hunted. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Modern day lexicon is not helping certainly. If everything is &#8216; <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">awesome<\/span><\/em> &#8216; as used by most digital natives in normal conversation, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>is anything<\/em><\/span>? Not getting the latest fast fashion style at the brand store cannot be\u00a0 &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>traumatic<\/em><\/span> &#8216;. But it ends up being so. By attaching the label of \u201ctrauma\u201d to run-of-the-mill challenges, we risk amplifying their significance, making them appear insurmountable, and potentially hindering our healing journey.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-934\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IDENTITY-CRY-CEASE.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2000\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">We are all nomads here<\/span><\/i>. So, the way out is to take advantage of the fluidity of life and adapt accordingly. Labels need not come with permanent glue.\u00a0<i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Treat them like Post-It Notes.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0There\u00a0today, not there\u00a0tomorrow. You can stick them on and peel them off, as and when you please.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Show it who is the boss- you are the landlord, the\u00a0<i><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">label<\/span><\/i>\u00a0is only a fleeting tenant. Use them like tools and not get bound by them as rules.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Obsessing over your own labels stops you from being an authentic version of you.
