Requests for connections. Another feather in the cap. Another vanilla metric to flaunt your social standing. Another &#8216;virtual friend&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The legendary\u00a0<strong>Greek Philosopher Aristotle<\/strong>\u00a0once said, \u201cMan is by nature a social animal, an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Society is something that precedes the individual<\/em><\/span>.\u201d He said this because human beings live in groups whether they are smaller like a family or larger like a city or country.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And that precisely is the reason why societal interventions seem to be dominating the discourse when it comes to offering solutions\u00a0to foster connection, often to the exclusion of more individual ones.\u00a0There are myriad theories about why we are struggling to connect, and just as many proposed solutions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-825\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Case-of-Good-Hope.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2176\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<strong>Surgeon General Vivek Murthy<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>United States<\/strong>\u00a0is in the throes of what he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.nytimes.com\/f\/newsletter\/_be0KOlfaN0Cuv5ARxG3uw~~\/AAAAAQA~\/RgRmlRBnP0R2aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubnl0aW1lcy5jb20vMjAyMy8wNC8zMC9vcGluaW9uL2xvbmVsaW5lc3MtZXBpZGVtaWMtYW1lcmljYS5odG1sP3RlPTEmbmw9b3Bpbmlvbi10b2RheSZlbWM9ZWRpdF90eV8yMDIzMDcxNVcDbnl0QgpkpWeLsmTXY_3lUhFpZHN0cmF0QGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAAw~~\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">recently labeled a loneliness \u201cepidemic<\/a>\u201d, with nearly one in four Americans over 18 say they often or always feel lonely. Things may not be very different in other countries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Findings at the intersection of\u00a0<strong>neuroscience<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>psychology<\/strong>\u00a0suggest that feelings of loneliness are a biological\u00a0signal, a clarion call to remind us that we need other people. That being said, there is a theory that runs counter to the default.
