This would seem weird coming from the guy who sent you this in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <em><strong>achilles heel<\/strong><\/em> of our times: Staying focused and distracted by a lot of ideas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We are living through a crisis of distraction. Plans get sidetracked, friends are ignored, work never seems to get done. Why does it feel like we&#8217;re distracting our lives away?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Donuts taste great when we are eating them. But we feel like shit some time after. We get a bit of <em><strong>short-term pleasure<\/strong><\/em> and <strong><em>long-term pain<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <em><strong>two primary motivators<\/strong><\/em> of changing our behavior are:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Avoiding pain &amp;<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Experiencing pleasure<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All the <strong><em>attention management strategies<\/em><\/strong> in the world will not work unless we feel the pain and the opportunity cost of distractions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>If anything, the world is becoming a more distracting place.<\/em><\/strong> Technology is becoming more pervasive and persuasive.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We all suffer from the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em>shiny object syndrome<\/em><\/strong><\/span>. The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em>thrill of the chase<\/em><\/strong><\/span>. And the <em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">after glow<\/span><\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Our <strong><em>biggest obstacle<\/em><\/strong> is fighting our <strong><em>addiction<\/em><\/strong> with <em><strong>social media<\/strong><\/em> and the <strong><em>mobile phone<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Wasting time online, ironically consuming content about how to be a more prolific, successful creator.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>Digital distractions<\/strong><\/em><\/span> create somewhat of a paradox. We get to <strong><em>avoid the pain<\/em><\/strong> of focusing on something that matters to us. And the <em><strong>dopamine hits<\/strong><\/em> we get from checking our emails or scrolling through our <strong>Instagram | Facebook<\/strong> feeds. That gives us a lot of <em><strong>pleasure<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But that little boost of pleasure becomes painful when we realise that we&#8217;ve wasted time on something that prevents us from accomplishing our real goals.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>It&#8217;s hard to change anything until our motivation is strong enough<\/em><\/strong>.
