It is said that attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity<\/em><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The poet J.D. McCatchy<\/strong> captured this essential fact beautifully in his observation that\u00a0\u201clove is the quality of attention we pay to things<\/span><\/strong><\/em>.\u201d.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It’s a no brainer. Before we can create anything worthy of other people’s attention, we have to learn to manage ours<\/em>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Our world is the outcome of what we pay attention to<\/em><\/strong>. Period. Attention is the currency of achievement.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Being present is the best present we can give ourselves.<\/strong><\/em> And to others. There is a curious power in being present<\/em>. When we are present, we see the other person more clearly. We communicate better. We make lasting connections<\/em>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unfortunately, in our always on, go-go-go world, being\u00a0 with someone who is fully present and therefore offering attention is rare.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Good work<\/em> and great art<\/em> comes from deep focus<\/em> and deep work<\/em>. Our ability to be prolific, create art that resonates, that strikes a chord , tug at the heartstrings and hit people in the face with a crowbar<\/em> depends on our ability to focus<\/em>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Consider for a moment the kind of mental world<\/em> we can construct when we dedicate<\/em> significant time and attention<\/em> to deep endeavors<\/em>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cAttention, taken to its highest degree, is the same thing as prayer<\/em><\/strong><\/span>,\u201d Simone Weil<\/strong> observed as she considered\u00a0the relationship between attention and grace\u00a0at the peak of her short life. \u201cAttention without feeling<\/em><\/strong><\/span>,\u201d Mary Oliver<\/strong> wrote a generation later in her\u00a0beautiful elegy for her soul mate, \u201cis only a report.<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It’s hard to carve out time and space for work or art that matters if we’re always distracted by things don’t.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So, how much art have you made today<\/em><\/strong><\/span>?<\/p>\n
