One involving\u00a0<b>Lion Air<\/b>\u00a0in October 2018 and the more recent\u00a0<b>Ethiopian Airlines\u00a0<\/b>crash in March 2019.Both involving the\u00a0<b>Boeing 737 Max 8<\/b>\u00a0aircrafts.<\/span>\u200b<span class=\"gmail_default\">\u200b That amidst only 1 fatal crash in over 3 million flights last year. Which is a stupendous track record. So, in the light of this, something seems terribly awry, isn&#8217;t it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gmail_default\">It&#8217;s exactly for situations like this that &#8216;\u00a0<b>Crisis Management<\/b>\u00a0&#8216; cells or savvy\u00a0<b>PR\u00a0<\/b>departments or\u00a0<b>Corporate Communications<\/b>\u00a0team are constituted by brands, or so we thought.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gmail_default\">Ever since the first crash, it has been a series of muddled, fuzzy\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, sans-serif;\">obfuscation<span class=\"gmail_default\">\u200b and nothing else. Blaming the pilots, software glitch, we are investigating and offering all support, lot of cock(pit) and bull&#8230;\u200b<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span class=\"gmail_default\">Take a look at the &#8216;\u00a0<b>Enduring Values<\/b>\u00a0&#8216; section on the Boeing website and this is what it reads like:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span class=\"gmail_default\">\u200b&#8221; \u200b<\/span>Safety\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>We value human life and well-being above all else and take action accordingly. We believe all incidents, injuries and workplace illnesses are preventable. We are personally accountable for our own safety and collectively responsible for each other&#8217;s safety.<b><u>\u00a0By committing to safety first, we advance our goals for quality, cost, and schedule<span class=\"gmail_default\">\u200b &#8220;\u200b<\/span>.<\/u><\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gmail_default\">\u200bAre we missing something here? Is it difficult to walk(or fly) the talk?\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gmail_default\">For an organisation like Boeing, with almost 12 Billion US Dollars in cash reserves, was this too much to handle better? We wouldn&#8217;t want to think so. More than 50 countries have banned the Boeing 737 Max 8 series to be flown(with US being the last of the nations to do it). Brand allegiance, but at what cost?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gmail_default\">Silence is golden but only when appropriate.\u00a0<b>Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg<\/b>\u00a0have been conveniently missing in action when most needed except for comments of late saying &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, sans-serif;\">the company is &#8220;humbled&#8221; and &#8220;learning.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Genuine empathy communicated at the right time would definitely have not brought back lost lives but would have surely built a humane face for the brand. It is said that &#8216; crisis brings out character &#8216; and Boeing seems to have missed the flight.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gmail_default\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, sans-serif;\">The reticence could be attributed to the fact this aircraft model contributes almost 30% to the Boeing coffers.After many lives in the coffin unfortunately.(The stock has declined by almost 21% in the first quarter of this year).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: tahoma, sans-serif;\">Boeing is\u00a0expected to roll out a software update meant to give pilots more control over\u00a0<b>MCAS<span class=\"gmail_default\">\u200b<\/span><span class=\"gmail_default\">(<\/span><\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, sans-serif;\"><b>Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System software<span class=\"gmail_default\">\u200b)\u200b<\/span><span class=\"gmail_default\">\u200b<\/span><\/b><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<u>make it less likely to malfunction.<\/u><span class=\"gmail_default\"><u>\u200b\u00a0<\/u>\u00a0Scary!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"gmail_default\">On a wing and a prayer?
