The homework is &#8220;done&#8221; (it is not done, at least in my case it never was). The school bag has been hurled into a dark corner. The mother has been informed \u2014 via a disappearing act of Olympic calibre \u2014 that the child will &#8220;be back before dark.&#8221; The child is lying. The child will be back when the streetlights come on, smelling of mud, triumph, and somebody else&#8217;s tears.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This child \u2014 this unshowered, scab-kneed, completely feral child \u2014 is doing something that the modern wellness industry would bottle and sell for \u20b96,499 a month if it could figure out how. <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>They are playing<\/em><\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While you are currently paying a gym trainer named &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>Flex<\/strong><\/em><\/span>&#8221; to yell at you on a Tuesday at 6 AM, and while corporate wellness programs are serving you &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>resilience workshops<\/em><\/span>&#8216; with kombucha, let me take you back to the original boot camp. The one with no fees, no instructors, no protein shakes \u2014 just raw ambition, a pocketful of marbles, and the terrifying possibility that Paithankar from the next building might beat you. This game involved:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>explosive acceleration,<\/li>\n<li>ninja-level directional change,<\/li>\n<li>tactical deception,<\/li>\n<li>and the flexibility of an octopus escaping taxation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One wrong \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Kho<\/em><\/span>!\u201d and your entire team looked at you like you had betrayed the nation.<\/p>\n<p>Today people pay premium gym memberships for agility drills.<\/p>\n<p>Our childhood gave them free&#8230;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>along with dust inhalation<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">LANGDI<\/span><\/strong><\/em>( not to be mistaken for <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Lungi Ngidi<\/em><\/span>, the cricketer) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>aka &#8220;The Original Balance &amp; Stability Protocol&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Langdi<\/em><\/span> asks you to hop on one leg and tag the entire opposing team. Which seems manageable, until you realize the opposing team is running at full speed and your job is to hop after them \u2014 on one leg \u2014 through sand, gravel, cow pats, and the psychic weight of your own dignity slowly leaving your body.<\/p>\n<p>Your physio is charging you \u20b92,400 a session to improve your &#8220;single-leg balance and proprioception.&#8221; Tell them about <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Langdi.<\/em><\/span> Watch their face drain colour.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Takeaway:<\/em><\/span>\u00a0True balance is not achieved on a yoga mat with incense. True balance is achieved when twelve screaming children are running away from you and you must hop after them with the grace of an irritated flamingo. That is functional fitness.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">SACK RACE \u00b7 TYRE RACE \u00b7 SLOW CYCLING<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>aka &#8220;The Holy Trinity of Winning by Doing Everything Wrong&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Sack Race<\/em><\/span>\u00a0is officially the funniest thing humans have ever invented. You climb into a gunny sack. You hold it up around your waist. A whistle blows. You try to move forward by hopping, which makes you look like a confused kangaroo with commitment issues. The person who falls the fewest times while maintaining forward momentum wins. This is, accidentally, the most accurate metaphor for a startup in Year Two.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Tyre Race\u00a0<\/em><\/span>\u2014 rolling an old automobile tyre ( we used cycle tyres) with a stick, maintaining speed and direction across a field which was certainly NOT level playing \u2014 sounds insultingly simple. It is not. The tyre has its own opinions. It will lean left. It will accelerate downhill and become a genuine public menace. It will suddenly decide to go horizontal for no reason. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Tyred and tested<\/em><\/span> doesn&#8217;t mean anything here. Managing a tyre with a stick over fifty metres is managing chaos with minimal tools. Half of all middle managers I know are still struggling with this. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Tyre racing across gullies was Formula 1 for children with unlimited stamina and questionable braking systems.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Slow Cycling<\/em><\/span> is the most wickedly counter-intuitive game ever devised. Last person to reach the finish line wins. Which means: you must go as slowly as possible on a bicycle without stopping or putting your foot down. Every instinct in your body says &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>GO FAST<\/em><\/span>.&#8221; You must override every instinct. You must become a monument of stillness on two wheels. The wobbling is spectacular. The falls are legendary. The winner is always that unnervingly calm child who becomes an anaesthesiologist or a Buddhist monk later in life. In actual life, this place is called &#8220;your mother&#8217;s house&#8221; and the rules are identical.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>The Boardroom-to-Board-Game Pipeline:<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Ludo<\/em><\/span> taught emotional regulation \u2014 when your token gets knocked off for the 8th time and you cannot upend the board. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Carrom<\/em> <\/span>taught precision under pressure. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Saap Seedi<\/em><\/span> taught equanimity \u2014 the ability to lose 80 squares of progress, say &#8220;okay,&#8221; and roll again. The boardroom requires all three. We played our way into all of it \u2014 barefoot, unscheduled, largely unsupervised \u2014 in streets and parks and backyards that have since been replaced by apartment buildings and parking lots.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The games we played were not simple. They were sophisticated systems of human development that different communities across this vast, chaotic, glorious country had evolved over centuries. They encoded <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>negotiation<\/em><\/span> (deciding who&#8217;s &#8220;it&#8221;), <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>rule-making<\/em><\/span> (every game had local variants argued over intensely), <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>conflict resolution<\/em><\/span> (the endless &#8220;out\/not out&#8221; disputes), <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>recovery<\/em> <\/span>(from losses, from falls, from embarrassment), and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>the pure, irreducible joy<\/em><\/span> of moving a human body through space with complete, unadulterated freedom.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We ran without tracking our pace. We jumped without calculating our jump height. We caught our breath without a respiratory coach. We fell, stood up, and kept going \u2014 not because we had read anything about &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>growth mindset<\/em><\/span>&#8221; but because the game was still happening and we were still <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>IN<\/em><\/span> it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em>In Closing<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So the next time your smartwatch congratulates you for doing 8,000 steps \u2014 steps that your seven-year-old self would have completed before the afternoon snack, in pursuit of a rubber ball, without looking at anything except the game \u2014 smile to yourself.
