The pencil doesn\u2019t brag. It doesn\u2019t ping. It doesn\u2019t need Wi-Fi to work.<\/p>\n<p>It just sits there \u2014 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>a stick of potential<\/em><\/span> \u2014 until someone decides to make a mark.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">pencil<\/span><\/em> doesn\u2019t brag about permanence. It just <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>quietly leaves a mark<\/em><\/span>.<br \/>\nAnd when it errs, it <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>erases itself with dignity<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That alone makes the pencil a better leader than most boardrooms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Every time you pick one up, remember\u2014<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>it\u2019s a complete life lesson disguised as stationery<\/em><\/span>. That\u2019s the polish, the woodwork, the grain that seduces the eye.<\/p>\n<p>It gets all the attention. Pencil that as vividly as possible in the recesses of your mind.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We humans spend a lifetime painting our wood\u2014degrees, LinkedIn posts, designer suits. Very few bother to sharpen their lead.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sharpening hurts. It&#8217;s friction. It\u2019s loss. It\u2019s the sound of you scraping identity off yourself so you can write better lines tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Every cut you endure, every failure you suffer, every mistake you own\u2014they\u2019re your sharpener at work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Want a blunt existence? Avoid discomfort. You\u2019ll stay round, safe, and useless.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The eraser on top isn\u2019t for regret. It\u2019s a symbol of humility<\/em><\/span>. You\u2019d be shocked how fast you grow when you allow correction instead of defending creed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Erase. Redraw. Sharpening to edit. Re craft. Rewrite.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Self-chosen sharpening is called growth. Life-imposed sharpening is called crisis. <\/em><\/span>Pick your pain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at some common(and uncommon) examples.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/rogerfederer.com\/\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Roger Federer<\/span><\/em><\/a> sliced edges of his game to stay relevant at 37\u2014he was sharpening.<\/p>\n<p>Whenthe persian Poet <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rumi\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Rumi<\/span><\/em><\/a> burned through identities till only his words remained\u2014he was sharpening.<\/p>\n<p>When <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/tpKLTrx1Ck0?si=sQNoMOgI-0oCkQsA\">Annie Leibovitz<\/a><\/span><\/em> threw away early fame to rediscover storytelling through stillness\u2014she was sharpening.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Even the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Porsche designer<\/em><\/span> who left a single imperfection in every model to remind himself it\u2019s man-made, not divine\u2014that\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>eraser philosophy<\/em><\/span> in motion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s where pencils get metaphysically brilliant: they put the eraser at the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>top<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Not at the bottom where it&#8217;s convenient. Not integrated into the side where it&#8217;s hidden. Right at the crown, where you can&#8217;t miss it, where it literally stands above everything else.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The message? Your ability to admit mistakes, to course-correct, to unwrite your errors\u2014that&#8217;s your highest function.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That is why the eraser sits on top of the pencil. It is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>wisdom<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The leaders who have sharpened enough times know: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>the eraser isn&#8217;t defeat. It&#8217;s weaponized humility.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Most people spend their lives defending their first draft. Pencils know better. The eraser says: &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>I&#8217;m powerful enough to create AND wise enough to destroy<\/em><\/span> my own work if it doesn&#8217;t serve.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>That&#8217;s not weakness. That&#8217;s mastery.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If the below comes across as rebellious or a manifesto for the disabled, it is intentional.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So here&#8217;s my ode. The love letter. A battle cry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To every pencil masquerading as a decoration:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Your wood is lovely, but your silence is deafening.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To every person polishing their exterior while their purpose atrophies:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Your Instagram looks amazing, but your eulogy will be empty.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To everyone afraid of being sharpened:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>You can stay comfortable and dull, or you can hurt briefly and matter eternally. Choose.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The pencil&#8217;s genius is its honesty<\/em><\/span>. It doesn&#8217;t pretend. It doesn&#8217;t posture. It doesn&#8217;t confuse looking good with being useful. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>It exists to mark the world. Everything else is in service of that<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the end, the pencil&#8217;s legacy isn&#8217;t its beauty.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the marks it left behind.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The signature on the contract. The love letter that changed everything. The equation that solved the problem. The sketch that became a building. The note that said &#8220;I believe in you&#8221; at exactly the right moment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>You are not your paint job. You are not your packaging. You are not even your potential.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You are what you mark on the world when nobody&#8217;s watching, when it&#8217;s hard, when the only reason to do it is because your graphite demands expression.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If, we are too busy pretending our wood is enough, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>here is some lead for torque<\/em><\/span>( a k a food for thought)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Spend more on lead, less on wood.<\/em><\/span> For every rupee\/dollar\/hour you invest in appearance, invest three in substance. Read more than you post. Learn more than you perform. Build more than you broadcast. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Create more than you consume.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2356\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Create-More-Than-You-Can-Consume.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2000\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Erase publicly.<\/em><\/span> Next time you&#8217;re wrong, say it out loud. &#8220;I was wrong about X.&#8221; Watch how much power it gives you. The eraser only works when you actually use it. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The ability to stand naked in your own truth<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Befriend friction. <\/em><\/span>Stop avoiding uncomfortable conversations, challenging projects, and steep learning curves. They&#8217;re not obstacles. They&#8217;re the sharpener. Lean in. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Embrace uncertainty<\/em><\/span>. As they say in latin &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Dubito ergo Creo<\/em> <\/span>&#8220;- <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>I doubt, therefore I create<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Check your pencil case.<\/em><\/span>\u00a0Look at your inner circle. Are they pencils with purpose, or decorative dowels with impressive LinkedIn bios? You become the average of your pencil case. Choose accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Write something that matters.<\/em><\/span>\u00a0Today. Not tomorrow. Not when you&#8217;re ready. Use your lead while you have it. Every day unwritten is graphite wasted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So here&#8217;s the question, the one that matters I reckon:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>What are you writing?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Not what are you displaying. Not what are you curating. Not what are you optimizing for maximum engagement. I repeat:-<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>What. Are. You. Writing?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Because one day, sooner than you think, you&#8217;ll be too short to sharpen. The eraser will be worn to nothing. The wood will crack and splinter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And all that will remain is the mark you made.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Make it deep. Make it true.
