But hey, at least it\u2019s a distraction that tells you to stop being distracted. Meta, right? (You don&#8217;t have to agree).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alright, please lean in. Stop scrolling for a nanosecond. I want you to do a quick audit, if you can.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, as you\u2019re reading this, how many tabs are open on your browser? Be honest ( I checked, I had 18 tabs open). Is your phone buzzing within a 12-inch radius of your dominant hand? Is there a podcast about <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>optimizing your potential<\/em><\/span>\u00a0playing in one ear while you\u2019re trying to focus on this with the other?<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re all running a bizarre, self-imposed marathon on <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>a treadmill of distraction<\/em><\/span>. And we think the solution is to\u2026 take a break from the treadmill by checking Instagram? That\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>l<\/em><em>ike a fish taking a break from water by going for a swim.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The truth is this: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandknewmag.com\/an-attraction-called-distraction\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>distraction<\/em><\/span><\/a> today isn\u2019t something you fall into.It\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>something you live in<\/em><\/span>. Like smog in Delhi winter. Or traffic on Bangalore\u2019s Outer Ring Road. Or cats on the internet\u2014everywhere, all the time, impossible to avoid.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve got it all backwards, haven&#8217;t we people? The mantra for the next decade isn\u2019t &#8220;don&#8217;t get distracted.&#8221; That&#8217;s a losing battle. The winning move is to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>flip the script: Don\u2019t take breaks from distraction. Instead, take breaks from FOCUS.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let that sink in. It\u2019s not the distraction that\u2019s the break. The focus is the heavy lifting. The distraction is the default. And <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>your attention? Stop letting every cheap notification catcall it on the street.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If we take a quick world tour( we don&#8217;t need Expedia or Booking.com for this), we will discover the following including but not restricted to:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The Millennial Hustler<\/em><\/span>( aka The Silicon Valley Techie)- They\u2019ve got the triple-monitor setup, the productivity app that blocks productivity apps, and a standing desk. They focus in 25-minute sprints (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Pomodoro<\/em><\/span>, baby!). And their break? Checking LinkedIn and Twitter to see how much more successful everyone else is. They\u2019ve swapped one screen for another. The brain stays in the digital doom-scroll vortex. Zero recovery.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The Indian Student<\/span><\/em>( aka the NEET | JEE | any other competitive exam aspirant)- They\u2019re on a brutal 14-hour focus grind. Their \u201cbreak\u201d? Mindlessly scrolling through memes on Instagram. They jump from the intense focus of organic chemistry to the dopamine slot machine of Reels. The brain never gets a chance to reset. It just gets a different, more chaotic master. The result? Burnout. Anxiety. And ironically, worse retention. (<a href=\"https:\/\/calnewport.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Cal Newport<\/em><\/span><\/a> author of seminal books like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.in\/DEEP-WORK-FOCUSED-SUCCESS-DISTRACTED\/dp\/0349413681\">Deep Work<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.in\/Slow-Productivity-Accomplishment-Without-Burnout\/dp\/0593544854\">Slow Productivity<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.in\/Digital-Minimalism-Choosing-Focused-Noisy\/dp\/0525536515\">Digital Minimalism<\/a>) would say their <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>deep work<\/em><\/span> sessions are being sabotaged by their <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>shallow breaks<\/em><\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The Corporate Executive<\/em><\/span> (aka The Mid-Life Marathan):Back-to-back Zoom calls. Excel sheets that stretch into eternity. Their break? A quick cigarette or coffee or both while checking office WhatsApp groups. They\u2019ve traded focused stress for distracted stress. The cortisol never drops. This is the antithesis of the <a href=\"https:\/\/neeramahajan.com\/why-cal-newport-is-right-about-productive-meditation\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>productive meditation<\/em><\/span><\/a>\u00a0Newport recommends.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Welcome to humanity\u2019s new bloodstream: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>distraction<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DONUT-called-Distraction.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"3090\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t about adding more to your plate. It\u2019s about strategically taking things off your plate so you can actually enjoy the meal. Because, you are not a machine. Stop letting the world steal it from you in tiny, digital nibbles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been sold the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>t<\/em><em>ake a break from your phone<\/em><\/span> wellness jargon so often, we almost believe it. But here\u2019s the heresy: Don\u2019t take breaks from distraction. Take breaks from focus. Because distraction is the new baseline. Focus is the exotic vacation. Or read <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gulzar\">Gulzar<\/a>. Or just stare at the ceiling fan without checking if your Swiggy order is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>being prepared<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This disease is widespread and has no boundaries. Geography is history. In <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Japan<\/em><\/span>, kids are being trained in\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>forest bathing<\/em><\/span> to reconnect with nature\u2014because apparently trees don\u2019t have notifications. In <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Silicon Valley<\/em><\/span>, tech bros are paying $5000 for silent retreats where the main activity is\u2026 sitting. (I know you are suppressing a chuckle-your grandmother has been doing this for free on her charpai forever). In <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Bangalore<\/em><\/span>, teenagers binge-watch K-dramas at 3 AM and then sleepwalk through their JEE coaching. Their parents, meanwhile, binge-watch stock market tips at 3 AM and sleepwalk through their careers. In <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Kerala<\/em><\/span>, uncles claim they\u2019re <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>working from home<\/em><\/span> while half their energy is spent refreshing India Today\u2019s election exit polls.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Different geographies. Same disease. We can brand it <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Distractivitis<\/span>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You have been doing different forms of fasting and abstaining for centuries. Karva Chauth. Ramadan. Ekadashi. Lent. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Think of focus as fasting<\/em><\/span>. You don\u2019t fast from food forever. You fast for a period to reboot the system. Likewise, you don\u2019t quit distraction\u2014it\u2019s impossible. But you can fast from it by gifting yourself windows of pure focus.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Analog is the new luxury.<\/em><\/span> A paper notebook, a pen, and zero chance of accidentally doom scrolling.
