You could walk away, find another machine, maybe even discover a 24-hour bakery with fresh croissants down the street. But no\u2014you&#8217;re committed to this mechanical hostage situation because you need that sugar rush\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>right now<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Welcome to your entire relationship with <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>ASAP<\/em><\/span>, my friend.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Full Transparency<\/em><\/span>: I have been toying with this blog post idea for the past several weeks. Researching and scribbling points as time went by. Even got our designer at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandknewmag.com\/brand-storytelling-to-brand-story-living\/\">ISD Global<\/a> to craft something( see below) and our video editor to conceptualise a video as well which you might want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/isd-global_asap-could-yes-could-be-as-slow-as-possible-activity-7273197108923396098-d5Ns?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAA4cjJkBI4jU0J8zkyXMt_YZH6KtXI3LAT0\">watch here<\/a>. It could have been published probably in June. But, instead, I asked<strong>:<\/strong> &#8220;What&#8217;s possible with this idea that I haven&#8217;t explored yet?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The ASAP version\u00a0<\/em><\/span>would have gotten published sooner.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The possible version\u00a0<\/em><\/span>might actually change how you think about time, decisions, and what matters.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Which would you rather read?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2316\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ASAP.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2000\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The greatest achievements in human history\u2014from the pyramids to the internet\u2014weren&#8217;t built by people asking &#8220;How soon?&#8221; They were built by people asking &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>What if<\/em><\/span>?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You feel it, don\u2019t you? That tiny, digital fist that clenches in your gut the moment you see those four capital letters. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>ASAP<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>It pings into your inbox, slides into a Slack channel, is muttered in a meeting. It\u2019s the Swiss Army knife of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/2025\/02\/22\/corporate-jargonthe-origin-of-the-non-cooperation-movement\/\">corporate vocabulary<\/a>\u2014seemingly versatile, ultimately clunky, and almost always used to pry open a can of urgency that didn\u2019t need opening.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been conditioned to treat \u201cASAP\u201d as the pinnacle of priority. The alpha and omega of action. But I\u2019m here to tell you, with the conviction of a man who has seen one too many \u201cURGENT!!\u201d emails about the font size on a footer, that ASAP is a trap. A sleight of hand that steals the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Possible<\/em><\/span> to worship the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Soon<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not a timeframe; it\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>an anxiety-induced coma dressed as productivity<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The genius of the acronym is its disguise. It sounds so reasonable! A plea. Almost apologetic. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>As Soon As Possible<\/em><\/span>. Who could argue with that? We all want things to be possible!<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s the heist. In practice, the \u2018P\u2019 is quietly kidnapped, thrown under the bus, and never seen again. What\u2019s left is just \u201cAS\u201d \u2013 a frantic, breathless, panicked race to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Just Do It Now<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The focus shifts violently from \u201cIs this even a good idea?\u201dto \u201cHow fast can I make this look done?\u201dQuality, strategy, sanity\u2014they are all sacrificed at the altar of speed. We become short-order cooks in the kitchen of innovation, slinging greasy ideas instead of crafting a Michelin-star meal.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re not being asked to do what\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>possible<\/em><\/span>; you\u2019re being demanded to do what\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>immediate<\/em><\/span>. And there is a galactic difference.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Everyone talks about software bugs and missed deadlines. Let\u2019s talk about the weird stuff. The history rewritten by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>ASAP<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Back in 1772, a Dutch orchestra commissioner, notoriously impatient, sent a letter to a young <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wolfgang_Amadeus_Mozart\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Mozart<\/em><\/span><\/a> demanding a new symphony \u201ca.s.a.p.\u201d(or its 18th-century equivalent, \u201cwith utmost haste, post-haste!\u201d). Mozart, needing the guilders, cranked out Symphony No. 22 in C major, K. 162, in a matter of days. It\u2019s\u2026 fine. Pleasant. But, you guessed it, forgettable. Meanwhile, the pieces he was allowed to marinate on\u2014like his later piano concertos\u2014changed music forever. The world got <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>soon<\/em><\/span> instead of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>sublime<\/em><\/span>. We lost a possible masterpiece for a hurried assignment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1950s America\u00a0fell in love with instant coffee because it solved the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em> ASAP<\/em><\/span> problem perfectly. Why wait 5 minutes for coffee to brew when you could have it in 30 seconds?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The trade-off nobody calculated<strong>:<\/strong>\u00a0Instant coffee didn&#8217;t just sacrifice taste\u2014it rewired our expectations about what coffee could be. For three decades, Americans forgot that coffee could be complex, nuanced, or worth savoring.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then came <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Starbucks<\/em><\/span><strong>,<\/strong> which committed the ultimate sin against ASAP culture: they made coffee slower. Espresso machines that took 25 seconds per shot. Baristas who ground beans fresh. Foam art that served no functional purpose.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The &#8220;inefficient&#8221; result?<\/em><\/span> Starbucks turned a $2 commodity into a $30 billion cultural experience.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The deeper truth:<\/em><\/span>\u00a0Sometimes the fastest way to transform an industry is to completely ignore what the industry thinks it needs ASAP.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Dr. Sarah Chen, trauma surgeon:<\/em><\/span> &#8220;The doctors who kill patients are often the ones who rush. The ones who save lives take an extra 10 seconds to think clearly, even when every instinct screams &#8216;move faster.'&#8221;The paradox here is that even when speed is actually critical, effectiveness trumps urgency.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>1969: <\/em><\/span>America put humans on the moon. The obvious next step? Mars ASAP, right? <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>56 years later:<\/em><\/span> Still no humans on Mars. From an ASAP perspective, this looks like spectacular failure. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>But consider what happened instead<\/em><\/span><strong>:<\/strong> By taking time to ask &#8220;What&#8217;s possible with space technology?&#8221;, we got:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">GPS<\/span> <\/em>(which revolutionized everything from dating to pizza delivery)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Weather satellites<\/em> <\/span>(that save thousands of lives annually)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Communication satellites<\/em> <\/span>(that made global internet possible)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Materials science breakthroughs<\/em><\/span> (that improved everything from medical devices to athletic equipment)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The Prognosis or rather The profound realisation<\/em><\/span><strong>:<\/strong> Rushing to Mars ASAP would have given us a few footprints in red dirt. Exploring what was possible with space technology gave us the modern world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The most radical act in our ASAP world?<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Taking your time.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The rebellion is not in saying \u201cno.\u201d It\u2019s in reclaiming the question. When ASAP comes hurtling at you, your new power move is to gently, deftly, and irreverently drag the \u201cP\u201d(<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>possible<\/em><\/span>) back into the light.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The problem with\u00a0ASAP\u00a0is not urgency. Urgency is fine. Firefighters need urgency. Paramedics live on urgency. The problem is\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>false urgency<\/em><\/span>\u2014the kind that confuses\u00a0<em>soon<\/em>\u00a0with\u00a0<em>possible<\/em>. When <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Jeff Bezos<\/em><\/span> started <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Amazon<\/em><\/span>, he didn\u2019t say:\u00a0<em>\u201cWe\u2019ll become the Everything Store ASAP.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0He said:\u00a0<em>\u201cWe\u2019ll start with books. Possible.\u201d <\/em>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isro.gov.in\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>ISRO<\/em><\/span><\/a> put <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Chandrayaan<\/em><\/span> on the moon, it wasn\u2019t ASAP. It was \u201cAs Possible Given 30% of NASA\u2019s Budget.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michelangelo\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Michelangelo<\/em><\/span><\/a> painted the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sistine_Chapel\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Sistine Chapel<\/em><\/span> <\/a>ceiling. Not ASAP. Not even close. It took 4 years, neck cramps, and a paintbrush dipped in stubbornness.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If these giants had fallen for the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>ASAP trap<\/em><\/span>, we\u2019d have half-written books, half-built rockets, and a chapel ceiling that looks like it was whitewashed by a drunk intern.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>ASAP<\/em><\/span> is the currency of the anxious. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Possible<\/em><\/span> is the language of the impactful. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Soon is the Opiate. Possible is the Oxygen<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Stop racing to be soon. Start striving to be significant. The world is clogged with the mediocre results of hurried work. What it desperately needs is the brilliant, the durable, the truly innovative\u2014the things that are only ever <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>possible<\/em><\/span> when we give them the time and space to breathe.<\/p>\n<p>So the next time that four-letter acronym assaults your peace, smile. Remember the forgotten symphony. Take a deep breath.<\/p>\n<p>And go do what\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Possible<\/em><\/span>.
