The term <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Internet Sabbath<\/em><\/span> is derived from &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Technology Shabbat<\/span><\/em>&#8221; or &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Tech Shabbat<\/em><\/span>,&#8221; which is a concept modeled on the traditional<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em> Jewish Shabbat<\/em><\/span>, which was coined in 2010 by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Tiffany Shlain<\/em><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Ken Goldberg<\/em><\/span>\u00a0to describe a day of rest or cessation from technology with screens.<span class=\"pjBG2e\" data-cid=\"6a599d29-e0ea-4deb-a5d6-777bcee602eb\"><span class=\"UV3uM\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Internet Sabbath<\/em><\/span>( can also be called <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Digital Detox<\/em><\/span>) is where you refrain from network technology for 12 hours(or one day in a week). In the same way that the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Sabbath<\/em><\/span> in the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Hebrew<\/em> <em>Bible<\/em><\/span> induces a period of quiet and reflection well suited to appreciate God and his works, the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Internet Sabbath<\/em><\/span> is meant to remind us of what we miss when we are glued to a screen. No emails, no doom scrolling, no pretending to work while secretly watching cat videos. Just you, real life, and maybe a book that isn\u2019t lit by LED.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Without any coercion or bribe, we have willingly donned the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>digital straitjacket<\/em><\/span>. So, if we are labeled as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>digital junkies<\/em><\/span>, thats a fitting pseudonym.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Our phones are the first thing we check in the morning and the last thing we see before bed. The average Indian smartphone user now clocks a jaw-dropping 4.7 hours daily on their device. Americans? Even worse at 5.4 hours. That&#8217;s nearly one-third of our waking lives!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But Suresh,&#8221; you protest, &#8220;I\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>need<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>to be connected for work\/family\/the latest memes about existential dread!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A candid confession. I hear you. I&#8217;m typing this blog post on a laptop while simultaneously checking WhatsApp notifications on my phone and streaming a documentary about\u2014ironically\u2014<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>digital minimalism<\/em><\/span> on my tablet. My <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>hypocrisy<\/em><\/span> should not be lost on me at least, isn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The irony that you&#8217;re reading this digital warning on a digital device isn&#8217;t lost on me. We&#8217;re all navigating this new territory together, trying to balance the undeniable benefits of connectivity with the very real costs to our mental health, relationships, and ability to sit quietly with our thoughts for more than 30 seconds without reaching for a device.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Your <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>brain<\/em><\/span> has officially been downgraded to \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>buffering<\/em><\/span>.\u201d Your <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>thumb<\/em><\/span> has more <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>mileage<\/em><\/span> than your car. And if one more app says \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Are you still watching<\/em><\/span>?\u201d the answer is NO. I\u2019m just <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>rotting in digital purgatory<\/em><\/span>, thanks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As my 78-year-old uncle (a recent but enthusiastic WhatsApp addict) wisely noted: &#8220;In my day, we were unreachable most of the time, and somehow the world kept spinning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps that&#8217;s exactly why we need an <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Internet Sabbath<\/em><\/span>\u2014even a short one. Not because technology is evil, but because we need to remember that we control it, not the other way around.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>An <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Internet Sabbath<\/span><\/em> isn\u2019t about <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>rejecting tech<\/em><\/span>; it\u2019s about <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>reclaiming choice<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We check our phones over 100 times a day. And brush our teeth twice(probably?). Priorities people? Contrary to what this might look like, this isn\u2019t about going full hermit, renouncing Instagram, and raising goats in the Himalayas(Though\u2026 tempting, no?).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s about<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em> switching off to switch on<\/em><\/span>. A <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Digital Detox<\/em><\/span>\u2014because let\u2019s call a spade(or even a shovel), our dopamine receptors are fried, our thumbs have muscle memory for doom scrolling, and somewhere between your 478th <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">WhatsApp forward<\/span><\/em> and that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>1 a.m. YouTube rabbit hole<\/em><\/span> on &#8221; how to fold a T Shirt in 6 seconds&#8221; or \u201chow to escape a crocodile attack,\u201d you lost your mind.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Digital Detoxes<\/span><\/em> aren&#8217;t new. (Old)Monks were doing it before it was cool. Now the capitalist industrial complex hawks it with retreats, scented candles and hashtags that go <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>#MindfulUnplugging<\/em><\/span>. There\u2019s even a place in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Goa<\/em> <\/span>that offers \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Digital Fasting<\/em><\/span>\u201d packages. Ironic, because they first <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>DM<\/em><\/span> you the brochure. Pot calling the kettle black anyone?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The great irony is that &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>We are More Connected Than Ever<\/em><\/span> &#8221; and &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>We Have Never Been More Disconnected Than Ever<\/em><\/span> &#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The internet stayed true to its promise. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Freedom<\/em><\/span>. Or so we think. What we have is <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">anxiety, insomnia, attention span of a fruit fly<\/span>, <\/em>and<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em> phantom phone vibrations <\/em><\/span>that feel more real than your last relationship. Most of us are like a dopamine-deprived lab rat smashing the refresh button for <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>crumbs of validation<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, who&#8217;s the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Knight in Shining Armor<\/em><\/span>? Enter <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Digital Detox<\/em><\/span>! <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>NOT<\/strong> <\/span>just a fancy phrase tossed around by kombucha-drinking tech bros in Silicon Valley or Goa or gyaan-quoting Insta therapists. It\u2019s a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>survival tool<\/em><\/span>. For your sanity. For your sleep. For your serotonin. And no, this doesn\u2019t mean deleting every app and going off-grid like a cult fugitive.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It means pressing\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>pause<\/em><\/span>. Before life presses\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>delete<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t need to be weightlifter to weigh the pros and cons of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Digital Detox<\/em><\/span>. But yes, be ready to be surprised. You start doing things that you have never done in a long time. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>You start thinking again<\/em><\/span>. And get membership into the mental gymnastics club. You make friends with your worst enemy a k a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Sleep<\/em><\/span>. Not the \u201cjust-one-more-reel-then-I\u2019ll-sleep\u201d kind. Actual <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>REM(Rapid Eye Motion)<\/em><\/span>, baby. You begin to acknowledge(and use) an integral part of your anatomy. Your <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>legs<\/em><\/span>. Yes, you start walking. Go outside. Where birds live, chirp. You begin to make sense of your sensory organs viz <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>tongue, eyes<\/em><\/span>. You start having <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>real conversations<\/em><\/span>. And make <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>eye contact<\/em><\/span> while doing so. Hence, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>human decency<\/em> <\/span>makes a comeback.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Every coin has two sides. So, flip it and we could encounter some of these as well. You might hit the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>panic button<\/em><\/span>. What if I miss a meme? Or a scandal? Or Alia Bhatt\u2019s new skincare line??? People may actually <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>talk<\/em><\/span> to you. In real life. With breath. Yes, TALK. Be strong. It&#8217;s normal. No more hiding behind &#8216;busy &#8216;. You <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>get real with your feelings<\/em><\/span>. Not the reel ones. Thats perfectly fine. To err, is human.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Internet Sabbath<\/em><\/span>: Yes please. Because <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>your brain called. It wants a restraining order from your phone<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Internet Sabbath:<\/em><\/span> Yes please. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Because<\/span><em> your soul is on airplane mode. And you are yet to notice it.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Internet Sabbath:<\/em><\/span> Because\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>real life?<\/em><\/span> It\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>not clickable<\/em><\/span>. It\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>not filtered<\/em><\/span>. It\u2019s\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>freaking magical<\/em><\/span>\u2014if you <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>dare to look up<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Time to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>l<\/em><em>og out of your screen, log into your senses.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s your sign.Take a break from the noise. Close the 42 tabs in your mind.Touch grass. Stare at the sky. Kiss your dog. Or your partner.
