The caption of this blog post came to light after I read <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Greg McKeown<\/em><\/span>&#8216;s recent email newsletter with the subject line &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Breakthroughs begin with a break<\/em><\/span> &#8220;. Simple yet profound. Thank you Greg.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>exhaustion<\/em><\/span> might be the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>body language<\/em><\/span> that our culture brandishes unabashedly as an acknowledgment to the perennial quest called <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>productivity<\/em><\/span>, let us take care to note at that time, our brain is as effective as our smartphone on 2% battery level. Sure it will work, but barely and certainly not for long.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There has been always something obscene about the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>cult of the hustle, <\/em><\/span>the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>treadmill<\/em><\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>alienated insecurity<\/em><\/span> that tells you that the moment you stop running for even an instant, you will be flung flat on your face*.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Talk about\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>self optimisation- <\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">as if <\/span><em>human beings <\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">are <\/span><em>search engines??<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Can we <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>flip the script<\/em><\/span>? How about treating <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>rest as a competitive advantage<\/em><\/span>? <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Rest<\/em> <\/span>can be our <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>secret weapon<\/em><\/span>. The ace in our pack. Rest is not just about Netflix and naps( though, must admit those are glorious). It is about giving your brain and body the space to recharge so that it comes sharper, brighter and more creative. A classic example is that of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Serena Williams<\/em><\/span>, the tennis legend. She is an advocate for <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>rest hard<\/em><\/span>. Not just training hard. She has often spoken openly about downtime, rest, sleep, recovery. Sleeping for 9 plus hours only betters her cognitive sharpness, reaction times, muscle recovery as all of it are engineered through rest. And it has not in any way slowed her down. On the contrary, it has only propelled her forward. Just <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>23 Grand Slam haul<\/em><\/span>&#8211; good enough?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We all are familiar with the coveted &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>shower thoughts<\/em><\/span> &#8220;. Increasingly we realise that some of our best ideas are coming in the shower. Why? It is because our brain is finally got a chance to breathe, step back, connect the dots which we fail to notice in the tyranny of chaos. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Archimedes<\/em><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Eureka<\/em><\/span> anyone?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The perception that we fall prey to is that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>rest is reward<\/em><\/span>. That myth has to be busted. Rest is like a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Formula 1 Pit Stop<\/em><\/span>. Much needed to keep all our engines running. It is like the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Oxygen mask<\/em><\/span> that we need to wear first before taking care of or helping others. It is the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>strategy<\/em><\/span> that separates the amateurs from the pros. And <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>rest <\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">certainly is <\/span><em>NOT something you earn after climbing Mount Productivity<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The myth of the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>hustle culture<\/em><\/span> has been selling us this lie that grinding 24X7 is the only way to succeed. That hustle culture is like the over hyped influencer on <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Instagram<\/em><\/span>. Flashy, loud and ultimately exhausting. Sure, it looks good in the moment, but deep down you are aware that it is unsustainable.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Burnout is not a badge of honour<\/em><\/span>. Though the zeitgeist will want us to believe that. A classic example is that of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Ariana Huffington<\/em><\/span>. After collapsing from exhaustion, she made <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>rest her mission<\/em><\/span>. She authored a book on sleep, started a company devoted to well-being and became the global advocate for the power of rest. And shall I add she is not exactly slacking in the metric of success.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1927\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Burnout-is-NOT-a-Badge-of-Honour.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2000\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Microsoft Japan<\/em><\/span> experimented with the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>4 Day Work Week Rule<\/em><\/span>, it was observed that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>productivity increased by 40%<\/em><\/span>. Turns out that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>people work far better when they are not on caffeine fumes and regret<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Look at these examples for motivation:-<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>LeBron James<\/em><\/span>, One of the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>GOAT<\/em><\/span> in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>basketball<\/em><\/span>&#8211; sleeps 12 hours a day. More time on c ourt. Less wear and tear.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Einstein<\/em><\/span> slept for 10 hours a day. Follow the great ones. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Theory of Relativity<\/em><\/span>, not a coincidence.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Jeff Bezos<\/em><\/span>: He prioritizes eight hours of sleep, claiming it helps him make \u201chigh-quality decisions.\u201d And when you\u2019re running a trillion-dollar company, a few bad decisions can cost\u00a0<em>billions.<\/em>\u00a0So yeah, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>sleep is a business strategy<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lin-Manuel Miranda<\/span><\/em> didn&#8217;t create\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Hamilton<\/em><\/span>\u00a0by grinding nonstop\u2014he was on vacation when the idea struck. &#8220;The moment my brain got a moment&#8217;s rest,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Hamilton<\/em><\/span> walked into it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If top athletes, artistes, game changers and scientists do it, what&#8217;s your guilt? <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Because society has sold us the lie that exhaustion equals dedication<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Rest isn&#8217;t a reward; it&#8217;s like saying oxygen is a bonus for breathing<\/em><\/span>. You need it to survive, let alone thrive. So, let&#8217;s stop pretending that taking a nap is something you earn after a long day of work. It&#8217;s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>time to acknowledge that rest is the unsung hero of productivity<\/em><\/span>. Without it, you&#8217;re just running on fumes, waiting for your engine to seize up. So, go ahead, take that walk, or better yet, take a nap. Your brain (and your boss) will thank you.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1930\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/ISD-CEO-Poster-13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"2123\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Embrace<a href=\"https:\/\/calnewport.com\/my-new-book-slow-productivity\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em> slow productivity<\/em><\/span> as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Cal Newport<\/em> <\/span><\/a>articulates in his brilliant book of the same name. It is a book that challenges the myth that more hours equals more success. Nature does not hurry, yet everything gets accomplished.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Stop measuring days by degree of productivity and start experiencing them by degree of presence<\/em><\/span>.&#8221; \u2014 Alan Watts<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, go take that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>nap<\/em><\/span>. You\u2019ve earned it. (Wait, no\u2014scratch that.
