How remiss of us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All of us have been at the receiving end of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>corporate jargon<\/em><\/span> for a while now. The idea was to make communication slick but what it has ended up as a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>soul sucking black hole of meaningless hoity toity sounding phrases<\/em><\/span> that add <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>zero value<\/em><\/span>(rest assured) except to those <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Death By PowerPoint HR Slides<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at some of these jargon speak and see what we may interpret from each. So, here&#8217;s some <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>plain speak <\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">on the <\/span><\/span>most abused corporate buzzwords that are single-handedly responsible for turning meetings into hostage situations:-<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Touch Base<\/em><\/span>: Apart from sounding like a flagrant violation of moral ethics and privacy, and all the pandemonium stirred by the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>#MeToo<\/em><\/span> movement, who on earth gives you the authority to touch someone&#8217;s base? You shouldn&#8217;t even contemplate doing that with a barge pole. Are you trying to be <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Ace of Base<\/em><\/span>? Well, in reality, it is the well established corporate practice of &#8216; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>doing nothing masquerading as productivity<\/em> <\/span>&#8216;.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Paradigm Shift<\/em><\/span>: If <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Corporate<\/em><\/span> were to be having a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Vending Machine<\/em><\/span>, this would be definitely be their top seller. Working multiple shift. The intent is to show that &#8216; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>we are doing something unique, innovative and we want you to be impressed<\/em><\/span> &#8216;. That translates to for eg in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>advertising<\/em><\/span>&#8211; this campaign will be a <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">pardigm shift<\/span><\/em> on how retail brands do their communication. And what does the campaign say:- &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>25 to 70% on all items<\/em><\/span> &#8220;. I dare call it &#8216; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>paradigm shit<\/em><\/span> &#8216; and you are not getting one <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>dime<\/em><\/span> from me for that.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Low-Hanging-Fruit<\/em><\/span>: Did you know there is a new fruit in town- it is called the low hanging fruit. Full of antioxidants sorry anti accidents and one a day will keep <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>critical appraisals at bay<\/em><\/span>(Lest there be a clash of ego, I didn&#8217;t want to bring the other fruit, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>apple<\/em><\/span> into the picture). Deeper translation of this would be that my die hard lazy cousin Venkat would do this without battling an eye-lid. But we have to make it sound like a masterstroke. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Re-targeting existing customers<\/em><\/span> for example. Wow, simply genius.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Think Outside The Box<\/em><\/span>: This one brings out my boxer&#8217;s instincts. And the least I want to do is haul them over <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>George Foreman<\/em><\/span>&#8216;s grills. The brief goes something like this:- &#8221; come up with something wildly creative, while making sure its ultra safe, universally liked and it is something that we have done multiple times in the past &#8220;. In our experience at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.groupisd.com\/story\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>ISD Global<\/em><\/span><\/a> when we recommend something like &#8221; how about putting a dog riding on a skateboard holding your product and balancing it with elan and not letting go&#8221;, the reaction we most often receive is &#8220;That is too risky.\u00a0 Let us do a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>(boring ) customer testimonial video<\/em><\/span>. So, you figure out- whether we are inside or outside the box.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Let&#8217;s Take This Offline<\/em><\/span>: If <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>pretense<\/em><\/span> were to be given an <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Oscar<\/em><\/span>, this one would take centre stage. Admittedly, the story is &#8221; I have no clue what you are talking about but I don&#8217;t want to come across as ignorant in this meeting (considering that I am the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Chief Experience Officer<\/em><\/span>). We can always <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>pretend<\/em><\/span> that we will talk about it later and then I fervently hope that you will <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>forget<\/em><\/span>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Let&#8217;s Circle Back<\/em><\/span> : Alternative for saying &#8221; How do I <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>not<\/em><\/span> make this work as I have neither the expertise, the wherewithal or the intent to find a solution &#8220;.\u00a0 It is the richer cousin of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Let&#8217;s Take This Offline. <\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Remember it takes<\/span><em> two to NOT do.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>7. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Granular Approach<\/em><\/span>: Mumbo Jumbo for &#8221; Lets micro-manage this to it&#8217;s grave so that most in the team will start regretting they were ever born &#8220;. Boss: &#8221; Show me the last 5 years marketing strategy, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>ad verbatim<\/em><\/span>, but I insist that you show it in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>three different font sizes<\/em><\/span>. No change AT ALL please &#8220;. And you end up muttering under your breath &#8221; Why not I write a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Suicide Note<\/em><\/span> instead &#8220;. Justified, yes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>8. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Bandwidth<\/em><\/span>: The corporate experts on this will go to any length(and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>width<\/em><\/span> of course) to drop this <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>manna from heaven<\/em><\/span>( or so they think). When I first heard this, I thought this was a reference to either the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>FM<\/em><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>AM<\/em><\/span> frequency on the radio. I must admit that I suffer from <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>AI<\/em><em>COI(Auto Immune Curse of Ignorance)<\/em><\/span>. As you talk about an important project and expect support from the other side, prompt comes the response, &#8221; I&#8217;d love to, but I just don&#8217;t have the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>bandwidth<\/em><\/span> &#8220;. You see the last hour he( with his <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Lactose intolerance<\/em><\/span>) spent was on Instagram researching the best <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Avocado Toast recipes<\/em><\/span>. If he had the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>band with<\/em><\/span> him, he sure would have blown his own trumpet, while blowing your request away.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>9. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Fail Fast, Fail Forward<\/em><\/span>: I really I wish my Mom would tell me this when I was in School. I was(?) no good you see, but unfortunately she did not have the advantage of the hastily put together, crafted to deceive <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Mark Zuckerberg<\/em><\/span> coinage. The real side of the story is that &#8221; we have no clue what we are doing, so, the best thing to do is glorify failure, we have burnt out all our investors money( on the 17th Food Tech company coming out of East London), because we wanted to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>fail fast, fail forward &#8220;. <\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So, <\/span><em>this too shall pass.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>10. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Data-Driven-Decisions<\/em><\/span>: Now I know why they say &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>data is the new oil<\/em><\/span> &#8221; though I was surprised that the grocery store I frequent did not have this <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>new oil <\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">when I asked for it.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0He was graceful enough to give me a 2 litre pack of another brand and an inspiring afterthought &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em> Fortune<\/em><\/span> favours the brave son &#8220;. What this actually means is that we can selectively pick <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>data<\/em><\/span> that fits into our scheme of things and ignore the ones that don&#8217;t. After all, ignorance is bliss. &#8221; Me to CEO: data shows that our users hate this new feature, CEO to me: data also shows that our employees love the new feature. So, it stays &#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>11. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Synergy<\/em><\/span>: The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>unholy communion<\/em><\/span> of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>buzzwords<\/em><\/span>. It is the corporate method of putting two things together, who have no business to be in the same boat but hoping for the best. Probably the linguistic equivalent of putting pineapple pieces on pizza and having the audacity to term it <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>innovation<\/em><\/span>. &#8221; We have to have an omni channel strategy but our E Commerce site crashes far more often than it should especially when there is a sale, our retail stores are empty, so let&#8217;s find a synergy between the two &#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>12. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Ping Me<\/em><\/span>: If you are not good at <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>table tennis<\/em><\/span>, this is something that will ostracise you and making a comeback is an uphill task. What you have to read between the lines here is that &#8221; I am too important and busy to remember this, so, you remind me &#8220;. It is the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>digital equivalent<\/em><\/span> of a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>nudge<\/em><\/span> but with no sensitivity to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>subtlety<\/em><\/span>. What you should also consider and be ready for that one line marvel &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Ping me if you need anything<\/em><\/span> &#8221; is that I will continue to ignore your message and you will need to remind me 38 times before I condescendingly decide to respond.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>13. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Boil The Ocean<\/em><\/span>: This is a new one for me and still coming to terms with it. We just got used to swimming against the tide and get into <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Blue Ocean<\/em><\/span> territory and if they expect us to be swimming in a boiling ocean, it is a bit too unfair. This comes hand in glove- <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>ambition<\/em><\/span> at happy loggerheads with <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>delusion<\/em><\/span>. We are unloading all ammunition at one go in a frenzy of carpet bombing knowing fully well that most of it will never find its target, but we will do it nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>14. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Deep Dive<\/em><\/span>: Destination <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Shallow End<\/em><\/span> of the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Analysis Pool<\/em><\/span>. What it means is thorough research, diligence and validation. What actually transpires is a 10 minute skim of the Executive Summary, 6 hastily made Pie(in the Sky) Charts, before the profound landmark prognosis &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>the data speaks for itself<\/em> <\/span>&#8220;. Even though the data is mumbo jumbo with a vengeance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, how do we lesser mortals get our own back?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Time to come clean and admit that our corporate vocabulary that is ambiguous, elastic or inelastic( depending on which side you are pulling it from- giving or receiving) needs an overhaul.
