{"id":1871,"date":"2025-02-11T07:26:18","date_gmt":"2025-02-11T03:26:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/?p=1871"},"modified":"2025-02-11T07:26:23","modified_gmt":"2025-02-11T03:26:23","slug":"how-about-some-bragging-rights-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/2025\/02\/11\/how-about-some-bragging-rights-2\/","title":{"rendered":"How about some B(r)agging rights?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On a recent trip overseas, I had some\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>weighting<\/em><\/span>\u00a0to do upon landing at the airport, so decided( after the usual skirmish with sweat, suede and swear words) to be an\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>inno scent<\/em>\u00a0<\/span> bystander next to the baggage carousel as it aimlessly(and somewhat harmlessly) went around in circles.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Everything, Everywhere <\/em><\/span>is about the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>circular economy<\/em><\/span>( not the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Oscars<\/em><\/span><strong><em>,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>by the way!<em>)<\/em>. So, here\u2019s the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>360 degree<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>on it, motivated by well, you guessed it-\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>bags of time<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The absolute nonchalance with each and every piece of baggage gets treated once it finds its <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>(p)<\/em><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>ride of place <\/em><\/span>on the carousel has convinced me that the carousel is the only place in the world that is completely agnostic to brands.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Tumi, Louis Vuitton, Delsey, Tommy Hilfiger, Samsonite, American Tourister, VIP, BOSS, Open Story, Away, Echolac, Safari<\/em><\/span>\u2026all came (and went) alike. The message was loud and clear.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><i>Rest in Piece<\/i><\/span>\u2026till such time your owner( or an imposter) gets a handle on you! Oh there goes my\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Safari<\/em><\/span>\u00a0and I am not able to get hold of it. So is it\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>TATA <\/em><\/span>to the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>\u00a0Safari<\/em><\/span>? That you can take the rough with the smooth?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I realised that the carousel is like a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>dating app<\/em><\/span>&#8211; everyone is waiting for their perfect match, in all tinderness. Where your suitcase is playing hard to get. And watching other people&#8217;s bags go by is unadulterated entertainment. And do not be deterred by the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>SOS(Sea of Sameness)<\/em><\/span> which means the black bag that you think is yours, has 47 other clones. We can call it <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>airport roulette. <\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While all the time you are consoling yourself that <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">my suitcase is just taking a few victory laps before coming to me<\/span>&#8220;.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nowhere will you see a better study in contrast. The bags taking its own sweet time to get to where it ought to, unabashedly relaxed, clinically unrepentant, approaching arrogance ( I am the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>BOSS<\/em><\/span>\u00a0here, you better give me the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>VIP<\/em><\/span>\u00a0treatment), do not intrude on my\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>hammock<\/em>\u00a0<em>style existence<\/em><\/span>. On the other side, the owners: anxious, impatient, irritated, worried,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>chaos personified.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The bags I tell you love drama (and some gymnastics as well). Every now and then they bring you to the edge as they salsa, spin and swirl but manage to stay on top of the carousel. That in the process they knock off a few socks from ankles( sorry, that\u2019s the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Malayalee<\/em><\/span> in me) and aundies (aunties for the uninitiated) is a different story. Really edge of the seat stuff!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The area surrounding the baggage belt is actually a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>medical practitioner\u2019s<\/em><\/span>\u00a0delight. The ideal place to diagnose the following including but not restricted to :\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Slip disc, Parkinsons, Blood Pressure, Hypertension, Colour blindness<\/em><\/span><strong>\u2026<\/strong>is it\u00a0blue\u00a0or\u00a0green? (And the real owner sees\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>red<\/em><\/span>\u00a0in the bargain). If you don\u2019t mind, could you please help me offload the bag(read <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>cargo<\/em><\/span>) asks the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>lady in red <span style=\"color: #000000;\">with an unabashed sense of entitlement<\/span><\/em><\/span>\u2013 I travelled light this time-it\u2019s just <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>87 kgs<\/em><\/span>( any more and she would have had to hire a cargo plane). Though she swore, it was not a corpse in the bag. And we took her sword for it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Do you think the carousel is an ideal candidate for\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>acute nausea<\/em><\/span>? Imagine going around in circles, hour after hour, day after day- where does it begin? And where does it end? Flight or fight? Journey to nowhere begins here. Methinks its happy to be a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>spin doctor!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So the next time you travel, carry\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>XS<\/em><\/span>\u00a0baggage.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Xtra\u00a0Small<\/span>. Before you get ideas. Give the carousel a break. Unless of course you want to see some <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Delsey<\/em><\/span>, all at sea!\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>BOSS<\/em><\/span>\u00a0it makes no sense\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>TUMI<\/em><\/span>! Weight- I will ask\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>TOMMY<\/em><\/span>\u2013 maybe\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>HILFIGER<\/em><\/span>\u00a0it out! Or should it be\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Facebook<\/em><\/span>? They have pretty good offices with the carousel, I dare say.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>T<\/em><em>he journey is inevitable.
