Some call it the &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>bottom-line killer<\/em><\/span> &#8220;. Managers and bosses are in perennial strife addressing issues caused by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>absenteeism.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Amidst all the din and chaos created by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>absenteeism<\/em><\/span>, what definitely goes under the radar is it&#8217;s rather upwardly mobile cousin: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>presenteeism<\/em><\/span>. <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Presenteeism<\/span><\/em> is the act of being present at work without being productive, normally because of poor physical or mental health. Most of us would be wondering why is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>presenteeism<\/em><\/span> is getting the flak- because it is considered a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>serious hidden productivity killer<\/em><\/span> and we need to be paying serious attention to it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1670\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Relaxing-is-a-Collective-Responsibility.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2000\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We all have observed the over diligent, the over committed team member- who works far longer hours than necessary, shows up at work even she is sick. What does not get measured is not only the loss in performance and productivity but the serious consequences it can have on physical and mental health. If you\u2019ve ever popped a few paracetamols and dragged yourself to work with a splitting headache, you\u2019ve been involved in it yourself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Research has shown up many reasons for <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>presenteeism<\/em><\/span>&#8211; including but not restricted to:-<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>lack of job security- triggering the need to show up, all the time<\/li>\n<li>being a workaholic( they enjoy the lowest level of happiness and highest burnout)<\/li>\n<li>The Damocles Sword of<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em> deadlines<\/em><\/span> and lack of support to meet them<\/li>\n<li>The Type A personality whose self-esteem gets a boost if they are continuously going beyond<\/li>\n<li>Work that involves welfare and doing good- like social work, teaching etc, where it becomes a mission<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Remember, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>presenteeism<\/em><\/span>, like burnout is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>not a badge of honor<\/em><\/span>. So the next time you find yourself working longer hours than necessary or showing up to work when you\u2019re sick, remember to do a pause and review and examine whether you\u2019re falling into the trap of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>presenteeism<\/em><\/span>.
