{"id":1612,"date":"2024-06-26T17:11:03","date_gmt":"2024-06-26T13:11:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/?p=1612"},"modified":"2024-06-26T17:11:10","modified_gmt":"2024-06-26T13:11:10","slug":"hows-your-gratitude-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/2024\/06\/26\/hows-your-gratitude-index\/","title":{"rendered":"How&#8217;s your &#8216;gratitude index&#8217;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Arthur_Ward\">William Arthur Ward<\/a> once said, \u201cFeeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If this seems like a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>mid-week pick me up<\/em><\/span>, you may not be wrong.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As we moan and groan about the things and material possessions that we don&#8217;t have in this <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Republic of Not Enough<\/em><\/span>, flip the coin the other way to acknowledge what you have to be grateful for. When in doubt, default to gratitude. There is no better safety net nor a more energising trigger than expressing gratitude.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Gratitude begets more gratitude<\/span><\/em>. It plays on loop and affects all involved positively. The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>ROG (Return on Gratitude)<\/em><\/span> is immense. It could have been a venture capital&#8217;s delight considering the <a href=\"https:\/\/corporatefinanceinstitute.com\/resources\/valuation\/internal-rate-return-irr\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>IRR<\/em><\/span><\/a> it delivers and its ability to scale.Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1613\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Resolutions-for-a-Life-Worth-Living.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2317\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Gratitude is not something that you get choosy about, being grateful for only all the good things you have. It is to be <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>grateful for all of life<\/em><\/span>. If you permit me a bit of wandering into stoicism- In the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/zbzvB\"><em>Discourses<\/em><\/a>, Epictetus says, \u201cIt is easy to praise providence for anything that may happen if you have two qualities: a complete view of what has actually happened in each instance, and a sense of gratitude.\u201d On the surface, much of what we\u2019re upset about or wish hadn\u2019t occurred is so objectionable that gratitude seems impossible. But if we can zoom out for that more complete view, understanding and appreciation can emerge. First off,\u00a0<em>you\u2019re alive.<\/em>\u00a0That\u2019s the silver lining of every shitty situation and should not be forgotten. But second, everything that has happened and is happening is bringing you to where you are. It\u2019s contributing to the person you have become. And that\u2019s a good thing. This understanding, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epictetus\">Epictetus<\/a> said, helps you see the world in full color\u2014in the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>color of gratitude<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We have so much to celebrate and feel grateful for especially:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>-The magical\u00a0 people in our lives who give us the unstinted support and boundless love we need to make a difference, without bias or judgement and\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The opportunity to build something bigger and better than ourselves, something worth contributing to. The ability to make connections, to lend a hand, to invent and create.
