{"id":1505,"date":"2024-04-30T18:42:01","date_gmt":"2024-04-30T14:42:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/?p=1505"},"modified":"2024-04-30T18:42:18","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T14:42:18","slug":"telling-the-talent-tale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/2024\/04\/30\/telling-the-talent-tale\/","title":{"rendered":"Telling the Talent Tale!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There used to be this fabulous guy, of all places, at the international arrivals airport hall of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarkairport.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Newark<\/em><\/span><\/a>(<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>New Jersey<\/em><\/span>) airport who sang, yes sang -weary travelers towards the baggage claim area at 6 am.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Talent<\/em><\/span>&#8211; what a word!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I love the word. So different and far removed from the over fatigued:-<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8221; employees &#8220;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8221; personnel &#8220;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8221; human resources &#8220;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Talent<\/em><\/span>! Just hearing the word makes you feel like doing chest bumps, offering the high five. Uttering it makes you puff up and feel good about yourself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You love the word because the adjacent images that come to mind include <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zakir_Hussain_(musician)\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Zakir Hussain<\/em><\/span> <\/a>playing(toying with?) the tabla, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yo-Yo_Ma\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Yo Yo Ma<\/em><\/span><\/a> on the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>cello<\/em><\/span>. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gene_Hackman\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Gene Hackman<\/em><\/span><\/a> in total control of a scene. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lata_Mangeshkar\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Lata Mangeshkar<\/em><\/span><\/a> in crooning glory. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Pavarotti<\/em><\/span> in full throttle. The quintessential <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Kevin De Bruyne<\/em><\/span> sublime assist. And <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Jordan\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Michael Jordan<\/em><\/span><\/a> &#8221; <em>parting the waters<\/em> &#8221; &#8230; and making that famous last shot that won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/bulls\/\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Chicago Bulls<\/span><\/em><\/a> their sixth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/playoffs\/2024\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>NBA Championship<\/em><\/span> <\/a>during his tenure with the team.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Talent! What a word!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To quote editor extraordinaire <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tina_Brown\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Tina Brown<\/em><\/span><\/a> &#8221; The first thing is to hire enough talent that a critical mass of excitement starts to grow &#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Coming to Your Local Cinema<\/em><\/span>: The story thus far goes like this: We lived through the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Age of Agriculture.<\/em><\/span> Then the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Industrial Age<\/em><\/span>. The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Information Age<\/em><\/span> followed suit. And what has arrived on the Big Screen. The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Age of Creation Intensification<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The white collar paper processing age is&#8230; long gone. Great products are not enough.(Not nearly enough). Great services are not enough. ( Not nearly enough). New bases for value-added are imperative- posthaste. And the revolution has only begun.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/PISS-PEOPLE-OFF.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2000\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You are not going to make it in the next new forever changing dynamic with yesteryear concepts be it <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>TQM(Total Quality Management)<\/em><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Six Sigma<\/em><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>CI(Continuous Improvement)<\/em><\/span> or any of those other New Nostrums that we so obsessively embraced 25-30 years ago. You are going to make it by providing &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Solutions<\/em><\/span> &#8220;. ..&#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Experiences<\/em><\/span> &#8220;..&#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Beautiful Systems<\/em><\/span> &#8220;..&#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Dream Fulfillment<\/em><\/span> &#8220;..&#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Design that WOWs<\/em><\/span> &#8220;..&#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Brands that Inspire<\/em><\/span> &#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And this &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>new stuff<\/em><\/span> &#8216; is all about &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>creativity<\/em><\/span> &#8220;..&#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>imagination<\/em><\/span> &#8220;..&#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>intellectual capital<\/em> <\/span>&#8220;. And that stuff is all about..<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Talent<\/em><\/span>. The new technologies that undergird the white collar revolution may seem like a dehumanizing force; but, they herald the end of &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>grunge<\/em><\/span>&#8221; work and thence a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>People&#8217;s Revolution<\/em><\/span>. In other words, a &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Talent Revolution<\/em> <\/span>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fundamental premise for all those who have already(or now willing to acknowledge it)- we have entered <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The Age of Talent<\/span><\/em>. &#8221; Okay, fine, &#8221; I can hear you saying. &#8221; Put people first. Been there and done that&#8221;. No..No..No!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The point being made is not about people being cool, people being important. It is that ..<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>people<\/em><\/span>(their <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>creativity<\/em><\/span>, their <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>intellectual capital<\/em><\/span>, their <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>entrepreneurial drive<\/em><\/span>) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>is all the hell there is<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Talent<\/em><\/span>(if you are serious about it) is a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>25-8-53 <\/em><\/span>affair&#8230;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>25 hours a day, 8 days a week <\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and<\/span><em> 53 weeks a year<\/em><\/span>. Historically, smart people have always turned to where the money was. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Today, money is turning to where the smart people are.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, time to go beyond the ubiquitous term &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>we put people first<\/em><\/span> &#8216; which drops off every second corporate lip without hesitation. Putting people first is according a special meaning to the word &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>first<\/em> <\/span>&#8220;.
