{"id":1381,"date":"2024-02-27T10:34:52","date_gmt":"2024-02-27T06:34:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/?p=1381"},"modified":"2024-02-27T10:34:59","modified_gmt":"2024-02-27T06:34:59","slug":"its-a-specialised-world-but-the-generalists-are-triumphing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/2024\/02\/27\/its-a-specialised-world-but-the-generalists-are-triumphing\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s a specialised world..but the generalists are triumphing!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve probably heard of the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>10,000 hour rule<\/em><\/span>, which was popularized by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gladwell?lang=en\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Malcolm\u00a0<span tabindex=\"0\" role=\"tooltip\"><span class=\"c5aZPb\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" data-enable-toggle-animation=\"true\" data-extra-container-classes=\"ZLo7Eb\" data-hover-hide-delay=\"1000\" data-hover-open-delay=\"500\" data-send-open-event=\"true\" data-theme=\"0\" data-width=\"250\" data-ved=\"2ahUKEwiM6Y6h6cqEAxUMh_0HHU2oARUQmpgGegQIEhAD\"><span class=\"JPfdse\" data-bubble-link=\"\" data-segment-text=\"Gladwell\">Gladwell<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/a>&#8216;s blockbuster book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Outliers-Story-Success-Malcolm-Gladwell\/dp\/0316017930\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Outliers<\/em><\/span><\/a>.\u201d As <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Gladwell<\/em><\/span> tells it, the rule goes like this: it takes 10,000 hours of intensive practice to achieve mastery of complex skills and materials, like playing the violin or getting as good as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Gates\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Bill Gates<\/em><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There is also the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bruce_Lee\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Bruce Lee<\/em><\/span><\/a> quote which goes like this &#8221; I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who had practiced one kick 10,000 times &#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The above alludes to the common perception that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>specialists<\/em><\/span> are having a field day and they are the ones most successful, while the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>generalists<\/em><\/span> are getting the wrong end of the snakes and ladders game. Yet, here&#8217;s another perspective worth considering- \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>A provocative generalization<\/em><\/span>,\u201d is what <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/K._Anders_Ericsson\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Anders Ericsson<\/em><\/span><\/a> calls the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>10,000 hour rule<\/em><\/span> made famous by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Gladwell<\/em><\/span>. The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>first flaw<\/em><\/span> of the <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">10,000 Hour Rule<\/span><\/em>: It focuses on the quantity of time practicing, not the quality of the practice \u2013 and not all practice is equally helpful. More here on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.6seconds.org\/2022\/06\/20\/10000-hour-rule\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Debunking The 10,000 Hour Practice Myth .<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Focusing intensely, racking up hours of deliberate practice, starting early<\/em><\/span>, are the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>de facto calling cards<\/em><\/span> for anyone wanting to develop a skill, play an instrument or be a leader in their chosen field. But what is more evident through research and real life examples of the world\u2019s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters and scientists is the fact that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>generalists<\/em><\/span>, in most fields are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>primed to excel<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Generalists<\/em><\/span> often find their path late, and they juggle many interests rather than focusing on one. They\u2019re also more creative, more agile, and able to make connections their more specialized peers can\u2019t see.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This might sound blasphemous but <a href=\"https:\/\/davidepstein.com\/\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">David Epstein<\/span><\/em><\/a> in his seminal book <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Range<\/em><\/span> makes a compelling case for <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>inefficiency<\/em><\/span>. Failing a test is the best way to learn. Frequent quitters end up with the most fulfilling careers. The most impactful inventors cross domains rather than deepening their knowledge in a single area. As experts silo themselves further while computers master more of the skills once reserved for highly focused humans, people who think broadly and embrace diverse experiences and perspectives will increasingly thrive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1383\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/How-Sacred-Is-Our-Space.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2000\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27217246\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>meta-analysis<\/em><\/span><\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/case.edu\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Case Western Reserve University<\/em><\/span><\/a> psychologist <a href=\"https:\/\/psychsciences.case.edu\/faculty\/brooke-macnamara\/\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Brooke Macnamara<\/span><\/em><\/a> and her colleagues found that deliberate practice and skill are related \u2013 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>but far from perfectly related<\/em><\/span>.
