{"id":1186,"date":"2024-01-12T08:48:56","date_gmt":"2024-01-12T04:48:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/?p=1186"},"modified":"2024-01-12T10:47:10","modified_gmt":"2024-01-12T06:47:10","slug":"are-you-in-the-race-to-the-bottom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/2024\/01\/12\/are-you-in-the-race-to-the-bottom\/","title":{"rendered":"Are you in &#8216;the race to the bottom&#8217;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Scholars believe that the term &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>race to the bottom<\/em><\/span>&#8221; first appeared in a 1933 Supreme Court ruling in the case of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Liggett vs. Lee<\/em><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Justice Louise Brandeis<\/em><\/span>, writing his opinion on the case, argued that in order to gain a competitive advantage, firms are incentivized to undercut one another while governments are incentivized to deregulate(Investopedia).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Being cheaper in the quest for short term gain is a calling. It is a trap. It is a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>race to the bottom<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you are a freelancer, you have experienced this more often than not. In the &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>gig economy&#8217;<\/em><\/span>, the &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>yet another<\/em><\/span>&#8216; is always a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>commodity<\/em><\/span>. You are short changing yourselves to land business thinking that the next project might fetch you better or higher. That remains a myth. You have just boarded the one way train in the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>race to the bottom<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The problem with the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>race to the bottom<\/em><\/span> is that you do feel that you are winning. In reality you are far from that. Because you are facing the brunt of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>the brutality of less and inferior<\/em><\/span>. Solution- find better clients. And there are better clients I assure you.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1189\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/PISS-PEOPLE-OFF.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2000\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although there are legitimate ways to compete for business and investment dollars, the term\u00a0race to the bottom is used to characterize unhinged\u00a0tit-for-tat\u00a0competition that has <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>crossed ethical lines<\/em><\/span> and could be <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>destructive<\/em><\/span> for the parties involved.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This could be because of cut throat competition. But, it is a vicious cycle, a whirlpool from which you cannot extricate yourself without compromise. When companies engage in the\u00a0race to the bottom, its impact is felt\u00a0beyond the immediate participants. Lasting damage can be done to the environment, employees, the community, and the companies\u2019 respective\u00a0shareholders.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The other side of the coin is consumer expectations for perennially lower prices and the squeeze on profit margins for organisations. The domino effect being sub optimal quality of goods and services and needless to say the market for such goods and services dry up.
