Here &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>sock<\/em><\/span>&#8216; means a hard blow, a lethal upper cut from heavyweight boxer. Well, I mean metaphorically.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We have moved on from the famous adage &#8216;Culture eats Strategy for breakfast&#8217; to\u00a0 &#8216;Culture eating Strategy for breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between &#8216;to the more finite yet all encompassing &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Culture is Strategy<\/em><\/span>&#8216; .<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, we received an <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>RFP<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">( how I hate the term)<\/span><\/span> from a leading University in the region asking us to pitch our branding, strategy &amp; creative services and submit a quote. The deliverables were very much what we do for a living but what was most disconcerting was the frequent use of the word &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>vendor<\/em><\/span>&#8216; every other line amidst the sea of largely unneeded legalese that such documents are &#8216;expected&#8217; to have. Taking umbrage, I called the CEO then(himself from a large MNC technology company earlier) and requested that the word <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>vendor<\/em><\/span> in the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>RFP<\/em><\/span> document be replaced with something more respectful and appropriate. I told him that if he expected our organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.groupisd.com\/story\/\"><strong>ISD Global<\/strong><\/a> to bring in its experience, knowledge, insights, time, intellect, effort and emotional labour to this project, we better be perceived as far beyond being a &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>vendor<\/em><\/span>&#8216;. Though he got defensive at first saying that is the norm and the <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">culture<\/span><\/em> that prevailed at his organisation over a long time, he was gracious enough to make the change.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t you feel sick and tired of the dreary &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>accounting department<\/em><\/span>&#8216; or the &#8216;<em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">purchasing department<\/span><\/em>&#8216; or the &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>finance department<\/em><\/span>&#8216; or the &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>procurement department<\/em><\/span>&#8216; or the &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>logistics department<\/em><\/span>&#8216;. Instead of thinking &amp; functioning like cost centres and accumulators of &#8216;overheads&#8217;, what if you are adding value, creating intellectual capital and becoming cool and in the process becoming awesomely, fabulously exciting. WOW. That will be a sea change in the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>culture<\/em><\/span>. And yes, that is the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>culture<\/em><\/span> ideally we would like to see.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1077\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Changing-the-Culture.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2000\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Designworks\/USA<\/span><\/em> is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>BMW<\/em><\/span>&#8216;s US design operation. The powers that be at <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>BMW<\/em><\/span>&#8216;s HO in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Munich<\/em><\/span> decreed that 50% of the unit&#8217;s activities should be revenue producing stuff&#8230;more importantly it should be done for companies outside of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>BMW<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The idea goes like this: if you are creating fabulous chairs designed for a top notch brand like <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Steelcase<\/em><\/span>, then that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>culture<\/em><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>creativity<\/em><\/span> will find its way into the design of the interiors and seating for <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>BMW<\/em><\/span>&#8216;s next model. And if you can&#8217;t make it in the &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>real world<\/em><\/span>&#8216; with &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>outside clients<\/em><\/span>&#8216;, then you should not be in business. Wow. Balls, guts, gumption, all rolled into one!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, some <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>guard rails<\/em><\/span>, if I may:-<\/p>\n<p>Culture change is not &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>corporate<\/em><\/span>&#8216;<\/p>\n<p>Culture change is not a &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>program<\/em><\/span>&#8216;<\/p>\n<p>Culture change does not take &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>years<\/em><\/span>&#8216;<\/p>\n<p>Culture change does not start &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>today<\/em><\/span>&#8216;<\/p>\n<p>Culture change starts &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>right now<\/em><\/span>&#8216;<\/p>\n<p>Culture change &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>lives in the moment<\/em><\/span>&#8216;<\/p>\n<p>Culture change is &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>entirely in your own hands<\/em><\/span>&#8216;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>mantras<\/em><\/span> to try with <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>IMMEDIATE EFFECT<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>We will do <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>WOW work<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We will seek out and work for <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>pioneering clients<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We will focus on the things that make us <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>special and distinct<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We will push to the hilt the things we are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>BIP(Best in Planet)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We will start<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em> now.<\/em><\/span> Right <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>this minute<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From enterprise efficiency to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>enterprise transformation<\/em><\/span>. From cubicle slaves to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>proud professionals<\/em><\/span>. From performing tasks to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>creating WOW projects<\/em><\/span>. From minimising expenses to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>maximising value added<\/em><\/span>. From procedure-centric to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>client-centric<\/em><\/span>. From minimising payroll and consultancy fees and hiring cheap to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>hiring superstars and valuing them by what you pay<\/em><\/span>. From going through the motions to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>tolerating nothing less than excellence and coolness.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A lot to be accomplished, isn&#8217;t it?
