{"id":1063,"date":"2023-11-12T11:42:46","date_gmt":"2023-11-12T07:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/?p=1063"},"modified":"2023-11-12T11:44:33","modified_gmt":"2023-11-12T07:44:33","slug":"in-a-professional-defense-of-the-amateur","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/2023\/11\/12\/in-a-professional-defense-of-the-amateur\/","title":{"rendered":"In a Professional defense of the Amateur!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some dictionary meanings first:-<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Amateur<\/em><\/span>: a person who is incompetent or\u00a0<span class=\"AraNOb\">inept<\/span>\u00a0at a particular activity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Amateur:<\/em><\/span> a person who\u00a0<span class=\"AraNOb\">engages<\/span>\u00a0in a pursuit, especially a sport, on an\u00a0<span class=\"AraNOb\">unpaid<\/span>\u00a0rather than a professional basis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To go with the above, there is a supporting cast of synonyms, antonyms, and words related to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>amateur<\/em><\/span>, such as:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>abecedarian, apprentice, aspirant, beginner, dabbler, and dilettante.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is obvious that there is no quest anywhere to crown the word <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>amateur<\/em><\/span> in glory. The world needs perfectionists and professionals, the ones who have been there done that.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The word <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>amateur<\/em><\/span> doesn\u2019t get a lot of love these days. When we hear \u201camateur,\u201d we think of a dabbler\u2014someone unskilled and undisciplined who flutters from one hobby to another.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, let us take a look t the origin of the word <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>amateur<\/em><\/span>: it came from the <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Latin<\/span><\/em> word &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>amare<\/em><\/span>&#8216;, which means to love. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>To do things for the love of it<\/em><\/span>. And, there is(gratefully) an audience that is coaxing and encouraging us to love what you do, and do what you love. Follow your heart, without wanting to hang onto the coattails of outcomes. Small, consistent progress is what takes the amateur to professional status(if she so chooses to).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>amateur<\/em><\/span> is NOT a dirty word.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1065\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/The-freedom-of-being-an-amateur-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2000\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It comes with almost <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>unabashed freedom<\/em><\/span>. The best time in your life to create, take the plunge, begin a new chapter, following your heart without the rabid pressure of expectation. Don&#8217;t overlook or undervalue the gift of this time. And still we use <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>amateur<\/em><\/span> as if it&#8217;s a dirty word.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Being an <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">amateur<\/span><\/em> goes hand in hand with having a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>beginner&#8217;s mindset<\/em><\/span>, when you are fanning your childlike curiosity, exploring, discovering and taking those small or big leaps of faith. Once we are established, we are governed more and more by outcomes and that comes with rigidity, close mindedness, the enemies of creation. So, hang onto that phase of your life where you edify your amateur self. Create, ship out. Rinse, repeat!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Never be afraid to try something new<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/strong>&#8220;Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic&#8221;<\/em><\/span>\u2014 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Dave Barry<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">Considered \u201ca man of colossal genius\u201d by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>George Bernard Shaw<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>G.K. Chesterton<\/em><\/span> was a prolific writer\u2014 publishing 80 books, 200 short stories, and over 4,000 essays in his lifetime. And in those prolific writings, <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Chesterton<\/span><\/em> gave <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>special meaning<\/em><\/span> to the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>amateur<\/em><\/span> over the professional, to the generalist over the specialist.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">In his\u00a0<em>Autobiography<\/em><em>,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Chesterton<\/span><\/em> writes of his father:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; To us (children) he appeared to be indeed The Man with the Golden Key, the magician opening the gates of goblin castles . . . but all this time he was known to the world, and even to the next door neighbors, as a very reliable and capable, though rather unambitious businessman. It was a very good lesson in what is also the last lesson in life: that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>in everything that matters, the inside is much larger than the outside. On the whole, I am glad that he was never a professional artist. It might have stood in his way of becoming an amateur.<\/em><\/span>\u00a0It might have spoilt his career\u2014his private career.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">Take the tech industry, for example. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Google, Microsoft, Facebook<\/em><\/span>\u2014all of these big companies were started by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>amateurs<\/em><\/span>. And then there\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Wikipedia<\/em><\/span>, which, despite being run (almost) entirely by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>amateurs<\/em><\/span>, has replaced the eminent and professional\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Encyclopaedia Brittanica<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">The internet has shown us there are people willing to make things with\u00a0<em>no immediate benefit<\/em>\u00a0at all.
