Thousands of years ago, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>conformity<\/em> <\/span>to our tribe was essential to our survival. If you didn\u2019t conform, you\u2019d be ostracized, rejected, or worse, left for dead.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Continued success in the modern world requires continued innovation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The ability to disrupt established methods and find new ways of looking at old ideas is one of the most sought-after qualifications in all fields. <\/em><\/span>It\u2019s a super power that allows you to be right when others are wrong.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Anti-Resume<\/em><\/span> is an idea floated by seminal writer and thinker <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Nassim Nicholas Taleb<\/span><\/em>\u00a0in his book <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The Black Swan<\/em><\/span>. Here&#8217;s how Nicholas puts it &#8221; &#8220;People don&#8217;t walk around with <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>anti-resumes<\/em> <\/span>telling you what they have not studied or experienced&#8230;but it would be nice if they did.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This borrowed thought from Hareb&#8217;s book was one of the things that I shared with a batch of over 150 students recently when I had an opportunity to pick up a conversation with them. Being in final year, and all set to embark on a career path of their choosing(though not always), the purposeful provocation was to be a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>contrarian<\/em><\/span> to stand out and get noticed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1050\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Understand-Everyone.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"731\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s such an interesting idea as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Kent Blumberg<\/em><\/span> puts it: imagine the hiring manager reviewing resumes and then going &#8221; we have reviewed your resumes and see how your education, skills, achievements and experience could be relevant to the role that is on offer. That is the reason we are keen to meet you. Now, we would like to now know from you your approach to life and work. So, before we meet, could you submit a one page <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>anti-resume<\/em><\/span> from you that will articulate the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>relevant education and skills<\/em><\/span> that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>you are yet to have<\/em><\/span>, the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>relevant experiences<\/em><\/span> that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>you are yet to gain<\/em><\/span> and the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>accomplishments<\/em><\/span> that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>you are yet to achieve.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now let&#8217;s look at the prognosis of such an experiment. The scenarios could turn out in multi faceted manner viz:-<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; candidates who might not be able to fill up a one pager show either of the two- a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>lack of self awareness<\/em><\/span> or they <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>feel<\/em><\/span> they are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>over-qualified<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; the perception of interpreting their future roles kicks in. For eg, some candidates might talk about their lack of sales experience as the role demands it. While some may ignore mentioning that bit<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; you get to discern the wheat from the chaff- candidates who believe their <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">development is in their own hands<\/span><\/em> while some others see it as an entitlement and a gift to be had from others- <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>you get to see who plays victim and who plays victor<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; you get to see the candidates who are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>intrinsically motivated<\/em><\/span> to bridge the delta in education, skills or experience and others who are not<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And why wait until you are looking for a job. Wouldn&#8217;t it be interesting to ask yourself every few months, &#8220;What haven&#8217;t I learned yet? What haven&#8217;t I experienced yet? What haven&#8217;t I accomplished yet? And what am I going to do about it today?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Quoting from a feedback letter by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Steve Roesler<\/em><\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>At the risk of getting a bit &#8220;jargon-y&#8221;, this goes to the point of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Conscious Incompetence.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the great learning curve of life, we revel in reaching a place of <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Unconscious Competence<\/span><\/em> in things that we do. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Auto-pilot<\/em><\/span>, if you will.<\/p>\n<p>Yet to excel, we need to pull back and take conscious look at what we do, how we do it, and the results that we&#8217;re getting.<\/p>\n<p>I like it.
