{"id":1027,"date":"2023-10-26T07:58:05","date_gmt":"2023-10-26T03:58:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/?p=1027"},"modified":"2025-08-28T09:08:47","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T05:08:47","slug":"hey-story-have-some-spine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/2023\/10\/26\/hey-story-have-some-spine\/","title":{"rendered":"Hey Story, Have Some Spine!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Most stories die young\u2014not because they weren\u2019t beautiful, but <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>because they were born spineless.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A few years back, I fell hook, line and sinker to the temptation of calling myself a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>storyteller<\/em><\/span>. The aspiration became official and I got myself designated ( fortunately there was no push back from any quarter) as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Chief Storyteller<\/em><\/span> at our organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.groupisd.com\/story\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>ISD Global<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. Little realising the onerous responsibility that I was taking on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Why Storytelling?<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">We have been <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>telling stories<\/em> <\/span>for as long as we\u2019ve been <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>human<\/em><\/span>\u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">They are an absolutely <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>essential part<\/em><\/span> of our day-to-day communications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Storytelling<\/em><\/span> can do wonders for a business such as:-<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">turn a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>brand into a legacy<\/em><\/span>,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">create a <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">robust marketing strategy<\/span><\/em>,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>generate profit<\/em><\/span> and..<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">win the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>loyalty<\/em><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>affection<\/em><\/span> of audiences<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Storytelling conveys purpose<\/em><\/span>, and..<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">brands with purpose are the ones that ultimately stand out<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>capture consumer\u2019s hearts<\/em><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>wallets.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; Marketing is no longer about the stuff that you make, but about the stories you tell &#8220;<b>&#8211; <\/b><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Seth Godin<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A story without conflict is like a symphony without crescendo\u2014technically music, but nobody&#8217;s holding their breath.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The stories that haunt us, change us, and refuse to let us sleep aren&#8217;t the ones where everything works out easily\u2014they&#8217;re the ones where something meaningful hangs in the balance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Filmmaking<\/span><\/em> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>storytelling<\/em><\/span> are tweedle dee and the tweedle dum. For years we have been exposed to what is called &#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The Hollywood Paradigm<\/em><\/span> &#8221; which translated to films following a default journey of begining with a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>set up<\/em><\/span>, moving onto <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>conflict<\/em><\/span> and then culminating in a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>resolution(climax). <\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That said, if your story can\u2019t walk on its own two legs, don\u2019t expect the audience to carry it on theirs. So,stop embalming weak plots with fancy prose; nobody remembers the makeup on a corpse.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At conferences and presentations a lot of us are keen to establish our identity, get our word out( our story) and then get onto the core of the matter(if at all)- but, the audience is not that keen to know how great you are but to understand what you can do for them. So, stop falling into the &#8216; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>hero trap<\/em><\/span> &#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Aesop&#8217;s Fables<\/em><\/span> and our <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>grandma stories<\/em><\/span> were all about begining with &#8216; <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Once upon a time<\/span> <\/em>&#8216;&#8230; and &#8216; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>then one fine day<\/em><\/span> &#8216;.. &#8216; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>because of which<\/em><\/span> &#8216;&#8230; &#8216; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>till such time<\/em><\/span> &#8216;..&#8217; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>and ever since then<\/em><\/span> &#8216;&#8230; You see the parallels here. This is what is called the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>Story Spine<\/strong><\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2306\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sureshdinakaran.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/sketchplanations-the-story-spine.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2160\" height=\"2700\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Storytelling<\/em><\/span> connects us, helps us make <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">sense<\/span> <\/em>of the world, and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>communicates<\/em><\/span> our <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">values and<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">beliefs<\/span><\/em>. The best stories are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>vertebrates<\/em><\/span>: they walk, run, fight, and endure because they\u2019ve got bones beneath the beauty.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>good story<\/em><\/span> makes us <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>think and feel<\/em><\/span>, and speaks to us in ways that numbers, data, and presentation slides simply can\u2019t. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Plot<\/em><\/span> is what happens. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Spine <\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">is\u00a0why\u00a0we care<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Don&#8217;t give your audience the itinerary without the destination.<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>spine<\/em> <\/span>of a story is its <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>northern star<\/em><\/span>, quietly guiding each sentence home.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A spineless story is like a handshake with no grip\u2014forgettable the moment it ends, because nothing was ever truly at stake. Spineless storytelling will look like gossip wearing a tuxedo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, stories don\u2019t live because you told them beautifully\u2014they live because they stood up when it mattered. If your story doesn\u2019t have a spine, don\u2019t bother dressing it up; the world doesn\u2019t need another limp tale in designer clothes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A story&#8217;s spine is its non-negotiable truth.
